The global movement towards gender equality has made remarkable progress over the last few decades. However, there is still more to be done. The freeform motion of the three subjects represents the desire to achieve gender equality. As they take a leap and sore, their every move is reverberated in the sway of their outfit that “bleeds” away. This “bleeding” away of layers symbolizes the unraveling of how gender inequality came to be in the society – revealing the root cause of the issue, allowing it to be understood and addressed.

Their desire to dance freely is juxtaposed against the “shackles” that weigh them down. “Shackles” of biases, discrimination and stereotypes that reinforces the vicious cycle of inequality.

Gender equality is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) declared by the United Nations. Through this piece, I hope to raise awareness on the need for more to be done to achieve gender equality – by removing the “shackles” that hold women back and unraveling the discriminatory practices, stereotypes and attitudes that are deeply entrenched within our social fabric.
